Does anyone know of a version of windows defender that actually runs? It doesn't seem to work...

I have an icon and the laptop says that it is there but there is no way of turning it on - it just doesn't seem to work. Windows defender seems useless, can we just use Microsoft Security essentials for 8.1 that actually seemed to work.
