System Crashes When Playing Downloaded Games

I am using a Dell Inspiron 565 S Desktop. It is about 4 years old, and is running the manufacturer installed Windows 7. It had an issue about a year ago where it had to go in for service to have a virus removed. It has been running fine since then, however, I get the "Choose Windows 7" message at start-up each time. It has developed a problem in the last few moths with certain games that are downloaded from sites such as Shockwave or MSN Zone. The game will play fine for about 15-20 minutes, and then the entire system crashes (meaning I have to shutdown and reboot). It only does this on certain games. Any idea what the problem migh be? Does it sound llike a hardware or software issue? Thanks for any advice.
