Guest situbu Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 New to Linux. I just put a machine together out of parts I had available and figured it is time to get familiar with Linux. Possible uses for this box are: 1. A hard drive station, for virus checking, imaging, etc. 2. A Plex media streamer (no transcoding) The specs are: 1. 8KNXP Gigabyte motherboard 2. Athlon 64 3500+ (2.2ghz single core) 3. 2 GB DDR RAM 4. sata1 HD As you can see, these are not modern componenets. Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit runs very sluggish. Unusably so. Ubuntu 10.10 runs fine, but is no longer supported. So 2 questions, really. 1. How secure would 10.10 be given that, if used as a streamer, it will be connected to the network & internet? 2. If 10.10 is not adequate, what version of linux would be lightweight enough for this box yet beefy enough to handle the possible purposes mentioned above? Thanks for any help. Continue reading...
