visual accessability

I am running XP and need to upgrade. The win 8 assistant indicates that it will not run on a screen resolution larger than 1024 x768. Is this actually the case? Will win 7 run on the less pixels, larger screen setting? I am legally blind and doing everything to be able to keep using a computer. When I try to use the 1024 x 768 it is very difficult.. MS shouldn't you be doing things to help people like me and not make it more difficult? If I sound grouchy, it is because I just spent and hour and a half trying to guess what the picture code was to set up an account. Really small resolution on that. Enough griping. Does anyone know of any way I can get around this? Thanks for your help.
