Guest OriginalMacAllen Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Not always, and not even often (10-12/week), but randomly, across my 12k installed XP "kiosk" systems, after they boot, they experience a series of service failures. The Network Location Awareness (NLA) service failed to start due to the following error: The pipe state is invalid. The Windows Audio service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The Computer Browser service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The Cryptographic Services service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The DHCP Client service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The Logical Disk Manager service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The Windows Time service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The Windows Management Instrumentation service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The Wireless Zero Configuration service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). Trying to start the Server Service by hand results in "Error 5: Access is denied" or "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified" when the file is clearly present. I tried swapping the path to dllcache, that didn't change the behaviour. NLA starts eventually, as does Windows Time, but none of the rest come up on their own. If I go through by hand, I can start most of them, but not Server and for that reason not Workstation. Rebooting the box makes the problem go away. It's never the same box twice, it's impossible to predict where it will happen, and it always happens on boot. When the box is in this state, it actually works quite well, for the role it is in. However, it is impossible to map to it, remotely manage it (services, event logs, etc), OpsMgr can't talk to it, etc. The user can talk out on the box, but no one can talk in. Any help would be appreciated, this one is a pain. Continue reading... Quote
