Windows 8 Automatic Repair - how long is too long?

The computer (an Asus laptop) couldn't boot ("Reboot and select proper boot device"), so I inserted the Windows 8 installation DVD and ran the Automatic Repair tool from the Advanced Options menu.

 

 

It went through the Diagnosing phase quickly, and stayed in the Attempting Repairs phase for exactly 4 hours now. Is that even remotely normal? It never took it this long with previous versions of Windows.

 

 

Should I wait for as long as it takes or can I just stop it by resetting the computer at some point, give up and attempt to perform a System Restore?

 

 

I'm afraid the second option might cause additional damage to the operating system. The hard disk activity indicator light is on, so it seems to be doing something, and the animated circle is active as well.
