Why do I get Windows Product Activation dialog box prompt?

Five minutes after logging off and shutdown of my PC I T turned on the PC again and tried to log on again. The logon was taking an unusually long to complete. Suddenly two dialog boxes openned. One had a timer ticking down to shutdown. The other was a Windows Product Activation dialog box saying "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do You want to activate Windows now? The timer expired and the PC shut down and restarted.

I tried to log on again and the Windows Product Activation dialog box popped up.

This has never happened before! What could have changed that caused this?
