I am going crazy.. need help from you experienced girls and boys..

ok.. i need your help. it seems like it is a banal problem, but i am busting my head all day.. and it just wont work. anyway.. i have like this little function in the entire script. and what it does is just has one while loop which needs to be ended at keypress..

 

it's a small piece of code.. but there is one problem. the loop won't end if i press space. Bash is just non responsive to space.. and unfortunaetly they are insisting that it works. Has anybody encontured problem of this sort..
