By now you will all have heard about the breakin at ebay. Although no bank account details were stolen, there was enough information about thousands of people to allow their identities to be spoofed, and if someone can persuade your bank that she is you, she'll soon have your account details too. The whole list is doubtless already up on a sales site on the dark net for every criminal in the world to access.

 

When online commerce is discussed, the emphasis is usually on how safe transactions are because everything is encrypted. Nothing is said about what happens afterwards to the information you have passed across. Of course it ends up on some company server, possibly encrypted, possibly not. And it is exactly as safe as the company's security policy makes it and no more.

 

That's why I prefer not to shop online. It may be cheaper and it is certainly more convenient, but peace of mind is more important to this old lady.
