Internet wont work after system recovery. windows xp

My brother has an old hp Pavillion computer with windows xp operating system hes been using as a back up

 

he recently system recovered it as it had accumulated years worth of data and was running really slow so he wanted to wipe everything off and start with a fresh pc. however, ever since he has restored it his wireless mifi device will not work anymore, you can turn it on and the timer comes on to show its connected but when you load up an internet page its saying their is no connection available.

 

at a guess we think there is a problem with the network connecter, but the problem is i cant access or update anything as i need to connect to the internet. (frustrating that i need to connect the internet, to fix the internet)

 

does anybody how i might be able to fix this or if there's a repair disc or software i can download. i havent got a clue for xp and i have contacting Microsoft but they have stopped doing support for xp.
