update failure reverting changes

I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 8 and it has gone to the failure configuring windows updates reverting changes for over 2 hours. I tried to restart following steps from a troubleshooting link and it went back to the same screen for another 45 min and counting. I did just try putting AVG on it and it also loaded a bunch of other things on. What should I do?
