Windows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker crash when I try to play .avi file

Hello, I am using Windows 7 on PC which was bought 3 years ago.

Yesterday I installed Xvid codec and used VirtualDub to make a .avi video with xvid compression.

However, after I finished, I could not play the video on WMP or WMM.

Both WMP and WMM crashed.

How can I solve this?

Should I install some additional codec pack? Or should I reinstall WMP and WMM?
