It's the old, old story. Nest had Windows XP on her laptop and now it's been discontinued so she has no Internet access except for basic email from her phone. The machine is much too old to run Windows 7. Obviously it would run most Linux distros perfectly well, but I have no idea how you go about installing things on a laptop; I've never used one.

There is no cdrom drive but I suppose there must be a possibility of booting from a pen-drive; according to Nest, there are several usb ports. What kind of image would I have to put on such a drive? Is it the same one as on a bootable cdrom or something different? We will be needing a live image so that we can check that it can handle her wireless card (and I have no experience of those either!) before installing.

Any help or guidance (useful links, etc) would be appreciated. She has done a lot for me and I would very much like to help her now.
