Desktop starts flashing and cannot access any of my apps

This has happened three times now - where my desktop constantly flashes and my computer become impossible to use as I can't access anything not even the internet or any of my apps. My computer's quite new - only 8 months old.

 

 

I first had this problem around a month ago when I installed some new software (Anki: http://ankisrs.net/ its free software that displays flash cards for language learning). The only way I could fix it was refreshing windows 8.

 

 

This fixed the problem - but after some windows updates this weekend the exact same problem came back. I did as before and refreshed windows but after just two days the problem is again back. I've now done a full reset of windows but not sure how long this will work for.

 

 

Any idea why this keeps happening? Do you think its likely a software problem or a hardware problem?
