Windows Defender takes forever to do a full/ custom scan

I am using Windows Defender on a laptop and have noticed that it will start to sleep part way through the scan. If I do not interrupt the sleep mode Window Defender will pause and wait for me to wake up the laptop, this may be several days before I return.

 

I have done everything possible to prevent the sleep cycle from occurring, including setting the power management to "Never turn off", staying nearby so I can stop the laptop from cycling. But this can only be done if I have the time to actually be available to perform this task which should be unnecessary to perform anyway.
