I'm about to take the plunge into Linux, and I'm looking for a few things. One of them is a keyboard-driven experience with high degrees of customizability, and while I'm not a particularly sophisticated computer user and want a user-friendly experience, I'm not intimidated by a (fairly) steep learning curve coming from Win 7.

 

I've gotten the idea that right setup for me is more a matter of desktops than distros, and that if I install say, Mint or Ubuntu, I can use any desktop I want. Am I correct in this, and if so, would some flavor of KDE be a good place to start?
