Win-8 Win Defender - cannot do a CUSTOM scan

I'm currently using Win 8 x64 and am using WinDefender.

 

It's on for real-time protection and I occasionally do a Quick or Full scan manually.

 

 

However I cannot do a custom scan on any of my drives, including C:

 

It immediately gives me the error "Your PC couldn't be scanned"

 

"The program could not find the malware and other

 

potentially unwanted software on this computer."

 

Error code 0x80509023

 

 

Any ideas?

 

 

PS- it would help if we could copy and paste these error messages!

 

I had to type out the whole error message above. I hope there's no typos.
