How is a typical user, home user, going to know how to support Dual

Booting?

If they follow typical, well documented security methods, why would they

need an alternative OS that won't run all of their needs?

> NONE of the problems that provoked my recommending Ubuntu had *anything*

Yes, you are, clearly. You suggest a solution without asking about all

of the requirements for their needs, you just ramble on about how it's

what they need without understanding what they actually need - you've

done this many times. Very poor methods you show.

> I'm still waiting for to email me your fancy dancy Word .doc that you

Not going to happen, you can do it yourself, easily, unless you're

afraid to be exposed again.

It inconveniences paying customers MUCH more, MILLIONS more, times than

it catches any pirates.

What costs more, the bad PR due to this crap and all the activation

seats in India and Morocco or the so-called money lost due to piracy?

The former, of course, when you consider that most people are honest and

most people buy Windows with a computer, preinstalled.

I see post after post on the Ubuntu newsgroup and other forums of people

who switched *specifically* because they are sick and tired of having to

report to Redmond every time they reinstall Windows or upgrade some

hardware.

And you've not shown one valid reason to drop Windows for Ubuntu for the

typical home/family user - and have shown that Ubuntu is not the

solution for anyone wanting to run popular games.

> Oh, and it isn't "stupid" people but people who don't know any better.

Yea, it is, stupid is simple, and there are a lot of Stupid people at

all levels, even network admins are stupid at times, some are terminally

stupid all the time.

And again, Ubuntu doesn't have the ability to replace Windows for most

users because you clearly show that it can't each time to admit that you

still run Windows.

So, Windows, does all that most people need, and it does it well. Ubuntu

does COMMON tasks well, but still requires you to have Windows for many

things - like running Office to work with groups that use Office

document formats, running most popular games, running technical

programs, etc....

So, there is no reason to switch to Ubuntu if you still have to keep

Windows for ANY reason.

The "typical, well documented security methods" are more difficult to

follow that's why and you never mention them when you reply to a post.

I don't see you mapping out everything about Windows when you reply to a

post, no links to how to keep Windows secure or anything. Oops.

I told you I did it and the word .doc worked just fine with Ubuntu. You

say that it won't and that you know some fancy dancy high tech way of

creating Word .docs that won't work with Ubuntu. Put your money where

your mouth is or STFU about it.

And those people can't give one example where they were unable to do

anything legal/ethical on their Windows PC's.

The perception of being a thief is completely based in FUD created by

people like you.

Complain all you like, your only point is that you don't like it because

you don't.

LOL - Except that it's 100% true. The only people that still get their

computers compromised are the "Stupid" ones. The information on how to

start-up a new PC, how to protect it from malware, etc... has been

around, on thousands of sites, in the news print, on TV, from friends,

for decades - the only excuse for a compromised machine is being stupid.

That's because they are ALREADY ON WINDOWS, I'm not telling them to

switch OS platforms like you constantly do.

LOL - I expected as much from a troll. You either don't have Office XP,

2003 or you don't know how to use it. Typical documents, other than

plain text with just font formatting, convert just fine, as I've clearly

said, but ones with advanced formatting don't convert and even some

placement of simple graphics don't convert properly. Of documents that

do convert, many are not the same exact layout as the source document.

Now, you can either admit that you don't know how to use Office, that

you don't have it, or that you're just trolling again.

The LAST thing I need when a NIC isn't behaving properly is to have to

activate FOUR bloody times and then have to call Morocco in order to use

MY computer. When that happened, I made the decision to learn Ubuntu and

I found out about Ubuntu on this very news group. Yeah, you're right I

And you know that a NIC being changed does not cause activation to be

triggered, a single NIC would not trigger it alone.

And yet you keep using Windows while telling people to switch to Ubuntu

as their needed solution to Windows problems - yet you fail to tell them

that they will still need windows (just like you do) in order to do

common Windows things.

You still don't mention security even though you know that most people

do not have a secure Windows. I think I've posted enough already so that

people know that Ubuntu doesn't do most games.

I have Office 2000 and it worked fine when I used it. Why should I put

out big bucks for Office 2003 or 07 when I don't need it?

Most people have no need for fancy dancy Word .docs and for some reason

you're afraid to send me one. So, are you lying, don't know how to

create a fancy dancy Word .doc or what?

Put your money where your mouth is or STFU.

No, being intentionally lacking understanding of something, notice the

intentional, means they are stupid. There are very few people that have

not read/listened/seen information about computer security, data theft,

viruses, malware.... Only the "Stupid" don't look for a solution.

And none of this means that Ubuntu is a better solution since people

still have to run Windows, as do you, in order to play popular games in

addition to many other tasks.

And that means that it wasn't the ONLY thing that had changed since the

last activation or that you had malware that corrupted the HASH for

activation. A single change, like a NIC, does not trigger re-activation

alone.

And that is a Major thing that many home users do with their PC's -

which means that at this time Ubuntu is not ready for the masses - only

ready for the tinkerers and hobby people.

What is your idea of real work? The company I work for uses XP now and used

NT before that. Both OSs are very stable and we do real work here. I've

been using XP at home since it's release and I give it quite a workout. A

lot of database work, spreadsheets, photo processing, etc. It has been

extremely stable. I cannot remember when the OS crashed, it's been that

long. I've recently bought a Mac laptop for my son and I've taken the

eight-month desktop I bought him. The hardware in that is newer than the

hardware in my homebuilt system and it run Vista. Thus far, I've got no

complaints about Vista. It is extremely stable running Photoshop CS3,

Office 2007, WordPerfect Office X3, Nikon Capture NX, Sigma Photo Pro,

Olympus Studio, and a host of other apps. For my work, Windows is stable

and suits my needs. All of my hardware works, I can't see myself going

through the hoops you have to using Linux to get hardware to work.

Ubuntu is BETTER than Windows because:

1. It's free

2. Not nearly as virus and malware prone.

3. The desktop can be configured in many more ways than Windows can and

you have more than one desktop. I have four.

4. It comes with over 21,000 free programs. Windows comes with NONE.

5. No activation or WGA CRAP.

6. It doesn't need Ninja hardware like Vista does.

7. You don't need to get another Ubuntu CD to install it in any language

you desire.

8. It's much more stable than Windows.

9. It never needs a defrag or clean up.

Most users think they have a solution because their computer came

bundled with McAfee or Norton. Most users do not read these groups or

any other technical web sites. Just because they are not spending their

time researching how to maintain a computer, doesn't mean they're

stupid. It means they have better things to do. With Ubuntu, there is no

need to do this research because it's, compared to Windows, practically

bullet proof.

For most people, games is the only thing and because most people already

have XP, they need buy nothing to move up to a real operating system.

If the buggy WPA program worked properly, you would be right. It didn't

and I was inconvenienced big time. There was and isn't any malware on

that machine. Since I called and activated for real, that computer has

been fine for over two years.

Not so anymore. Most people use consoles to play games as they are

cheaper than high end graphics cards and the "new thing". Do you think

that Redmond made the XBox because they thought that gaming was only for

Windows computers?

Your bias is showing again, your lack of ability to make informed

decisions, your lack of technical ability....

Windows is an OS, a real OS, as was CPM, AIX, HPUX, Apple, Commodore,

etc.... Each has their place, each works well for the intended target.

Only a troll/Zealot would claim otherwise.

At least 99% of the computers I see in homes also have at least 2

online, FPS games, most have 3-5. There are markets, you just don't

understand needs, that's why you fail to understand that Ubuntu is just

a hobby platform that doesn't do what people need in the majority of

cases.

Well, a friend of mine and I have convinced dozens of Windows users to

become Ubuntu users and you have convinced zero Ubuntu users to switch

to Windows. ALL of them, without exception, tell us they are much

happier with Ubuntu than Windows. For the few who did games, we set up a

dual boot with XP. Most don't do games.
