I disagree with that Saucy. The issue in those areas is not Linux's

ability to not perform well enough. It can perform extremely well in those

areas with ease. So just looking at the platform itself, it cuts it

perfectly fine.

It just simply doesn't have enough market share for developers to actually

use the platform. That ultimately is the issue, not it's ability to

perform.

And to be honest, I don't 100% understand why some developers don't do

more cross platform. I mean developers go beyond great lengths to try to

prevent people from stealing their games so they can gain a minor amount in

sales....but then they turn around and let a complete platform that could

amount far more in sales than their piracy prevention slip away.

I say games particularly because games are one of the easiest things to

write cross platform. They are not dependent on the system GUI, they use

their own GUI. Both graphics and sound libraries are available cross

platform and are used in the windows world often enough. Networking code

generally isn't platform dependent either.

Sure DirectX is dominant for windows games as it is not an illogical choice

for someone only targeting windows, but OpenGL is not any less powerful

and far more cross platform friendly. I mean ultimately both DirectX and

OpenGL are nothing more than abstraction layers to access the video

hardware so neither can do more than what the video card allows in the

first place.

For other types of Apps, I think that reasonable cross-platform

technologies haven't really started to mature sufficiently until about a

year ago. So I'm not surprised to not see more cross platform apps in

those areas. But maybe that will change in the future.

Ultimately what I'd like to see is both OS perform well and developers

writing more cross platform capable apps so that we, as users, can have

more choices what to use.

Frank, you're a one trick pony.

It's not that you use both that's at issue - it's that you tell people

to switch to Ubuntu, that they don't need Windows, and yet, as a common,

typical user, you can't abandon Windows any more than the people you

tell to abandon it can...

If if they had been using Ubuntu they would not have been able to play

games or run some of the programs they most likely did.

Infected machines are infected for the same reason that the Ubuntu

install was compromised - STUPID PEOPLE. The idea of compromised

machines and securing them has been around for DECADES. Ways to protect

windows machines have been public for DECADES, and they work fine.

Every time I hear about a compromised machines, it's always because of a

STUPID USER - there are zillions of sites telling users how to secure

their machines and yet they ignore them, even when they listen to

radio/tv/printed news, they still ignore them.... Much the same thing

happened with the Admin did something stupid that compromised his Ubuntu

machine....

So, since your neighbors kids won't be able to play most of the popular

games it's a good bet that if you put Ubuntu on their computers that

they will be back in short order to get Windows reinstalled.

And yet you preach Ubuntu as the solution to the commoners problems and

fail to tell them what it won't do, while you keep running Windows...

Unlike you, while I run several O/S's, I'm not preaching that any of

them are the best solution for anyone - they each have strengths and

things they do better than others. Your failure is telling people that

your latest toy is the solution to all their problems without telling

them that they will have to keep running windows to do many common

things.

No, I snipped what wasn't needed - WGA and WPA does work, just not a

complete solution, but it does stop piracy in many cases.

Even if you're not a gamer, switching to Ubuntu is obviously the best

choice for everything except gaming. And, if you're like me, you'll use

Ubuntu for everything and have XP on a box for gaming until the gaming

folks wake up and start writing games for Linux.

NONE of the problems that provoked my recommending Ubuntu had *anything*

to do with gaming so, no, I am not a hypocrite except in your twisted mind.

I'm still waiting for to email me your fancy dancy Word .doc that you

claim won't work with Linux but I am not holding my breath.

You don't know what the kid downloaded. The kid is eight and there are

plenty of games that come with Ubuntu that he will just love.

Oh, and it isn't "stupid" people but people who don't know any better.

Again, only games. Only games. Only games and, really, only some games.
