there is vista ultimate: costs a load of money

and there is ubuntu ultimate 1.4

http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=4323

this version rocks! I downloaded the virtual appliance for vmware and gave

it a spin...

The thought is.. if you are going to run in 1000's problems with vista, why

not take the plunge and use ubuntu instead?...

IF vista was better I would never be saying this.. but vista is a flop of

historical proportions!!! Its horrible!

from a site: Ubuntu Ultimate 1.4 has been released and has a new thing in

store for you. Unlike any linux ever released this allows you to "build your

os" from a CD. Like linux you will love this... Windows users will think

twice... Compiz Fusion integrated.

I am now thinking about installing it on a hard drive as a non virtual

machine so I can see all the

3d desktop effects...

http://digg.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Ultimate_1_4_CD_Edition_Now_Available

the preinstalled vmware appliance that can be used with vmware player is

here:

Get lost. No one using Windows Vista wants an

Open Sores operating system with no support that

takes weeks to properly install. It would be like

going back to Windows 3.1!

It takes under and hour to install Ubuntu with all the updates and

programs. The fact that the only way YOU know how to install an OS is to

buy it preinstalled, doesn't mean everyone is computer illiterate.

Oh please. I can do a complete clean Ubuntu install in roughly 2-3 hours

and that includes every single piece of software, my C/C++ Development

environment, nVidia Drivers and assorted video codecs and DVD CSS support

and everything updated to the latest and greatest.

You're beyond exaggerating.

If you wish, I can post all the links to your

previous posts a few months ago where

you yourself were asking a lot of questions

about installing Linux and expressed some of the difficulties

you encountered. Updates? There are now well over

200 updates for Linux distros after the initial install.

I don't think a rational person is going to chuck

Windows Vista (which they already paid for)

and install an alternative operating system that

may not be compatible with Windows-based

applications they already have.

P.S. I assemble my own computers. However, I did purchase

recently a nice HP Pavilion (refurb) because many folks

also purchase HP PCs and visit the Vista newsgroups

asking questions regarding HP products. Also, it was quite

cost effective compared to purchasing the same components

individually.

Can anyone today assemble a new PC with a modern ASUS MB,

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ CPU, 1GB RAM,

250GB Seagate SATA II HD designed w/Perpendicular Recording,

DVD writer w/Light Scribe, 9 in 1 memory reader, sleek new

case, power supply, keyboard, mouse, Roxio DVD writing software

and a full OEM version of Windows Vista Premium, for $369.00?

Compared to the P4 3.0GHz computer I assembled your years ago

and upgraded considerably for a total of $850, this new

HP performs exceptionally faster and is virtually silent while

in operation.

I have now installed a second SATA II hard drive and dual-boot with

Windows Vista Ultimate. I also installed another 1GB RAM

and a dedicated ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO 512MB video card.

This HP Pavilion has had absolutely zero issues with Windows

Vista and I have now stopped using my old PC w/Windows XP.

It may take under an hour to install that TOY OS called Ubuntu, but it will

Yep, about the same amount of time for Linux and Windows alike, counting

updates and applications. The difference is that with Windows you're

more likely to be able to work with businesses than with Linux.

It took me less than an hour to install the last time I did it,

The old, worn out and tired "you need to be a geek to run Linux" is

soooo nineties. Ubuntu is ready for prime time and the peer-to-peer

support is much better than what the likes of you and Frank offer.

And I don't think a rational person would install Linux and only have

Can't understand the analogy, eh? Gotta change the subject to your

twisted and lying fantasies about me, eh? How lame can you get?

I bought Vista Ultimate and, no, I am not impressed. It's a POS compared

to Ubuntu or XP for that matter.

Here's an expert's opinion of Vista:

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9000173&intsrc=hm_list

The Vista I have will remain unused until at least six months after the

release of SP1, if then.

Linux supports more hardware than Vista does. Unlike Vista, Linux continues

and will continue to support legacy hardware, along with being able to run

on different platforms.

Depends largely on what you do. In some areas yes, in other areas no. I

honestly have to say that when it comes to writing software, and I am a

programmer for a living after all, I wouldn't want to use Windows as my

primary OS anymore (among a long list of other things).

You don't have to buy a car to know how it drives dumbass. Write this

down for future reference: Most car dealers allow a test drive. Of

course you may be the exception, since I would suspect you come into a

showroom wild eyed and foaming from the mouth and probably start

screaming and stamping your feet.

Playing with Vista in a store while not the idea test does give you a

feel for how it performs. Surely more than some bozo like you taking

it home and using it to read email and surf the web which if the truth

be known is all a dummy like you is capable of doing on a computer and

only after many failed attempts. You're a fraud Frank. I know it and

so does everyone else.

Yes I'm well aware of the difficulties I encountered. I was a beginner who

had never touched Linux ever in his life before. Of course I encountered

difficulties. To expect otherwise would be delusional.

You seriously think that a beginner who has *never* used Windows is going

to install, and fully configure Windows in under 3 hours including device

drivers and everything? If you truly believe that, then I honestly have to

say you are delusional.

An experienced windows user? Sure. A beginner? No.

Same deal with Ubuntu.

An experienced Linux user? No problem. A beginner? Likely to run into some

issues.

So what's your point?

You may know about my very first Ubuntu install and the problems I

experienced. You don't know about the subsequent additional installs

that were problem free since I had no questions to ask. =)

May not? Will not! Linux is NOT windows for crying out loud! It is NOT

supposed to be! It is supposed to be different! That is the point! If

someone wants Windows, they need to friggin USE WINDOWS!!! Is that so

exceedingly difficult to comprehend?

So no, it does not run windows software and nobody should expect it to.

I really don't get the Windows zealots who think everyone should run

Windows and Linux shouldn't exist as much as I don't get the Linux zealots

who think the opposite way around.

I personally couldn't give a flying rats ass what operating system someone

runs. I really don't care. I care about *my own* needs and what OS meets

said needs the best. Period. For most my needs, it isn't windows...any

version of it. For the few remaining 5% or less, I keep windows around as

a dual boot.

Just because it is that way for me, does not mean it is that way for

someone else. Perfectly fine as far as I am concerned. Not my problem.

No but then again you did purchase a refurb so it'll be virtually

impossible for anyone to meet the price of a refurb without stealing the

components. Also companies like HP buy their components in bulk so they

get pricing deals that individuals could never hope to get.

I personally can generally meet or beat new-system prices of systems such

as that Dell and HP produce when it comes to high-end systems since their

high end systems are generally configured in ways that are just stupid and

ridiculous.

Low-end or mid-range systems though, it gets tough to impossible as I

could never compete against the volume prices those manufacturers get.

The only thing I'd like to spread is LEGS. Female of course. Ubuntu is

just a boil on the ass of society.
