How do I properly identify if Microsoft Security Essentials are running on my computer?

I'm not seeing Microsoft Security Essentials referenced anywhere on my computer. How do I ensure that it was loaded, or loaded properly? I uninstalled MacAfee last year from my computer under programs install/uninstall, then loaded MS Security Essentials from a very confusing and redundant set of many sites MS apparently hosts. I'm not seeing color coded risk levels in taskbar security identifiers that are described by Microsoft support. Why doesn't Microsoft Corporation just call it all what it what it is, Microsoft Security Essentials. and place app in Programs where everything else that is loaded on my machine is? Frustration on the basics shouldn't exist in this day and age of advanced computing.
