Desktop background slideshow leaks GDI Object handles?

I have about 5500 desktop background wallpapers which I've set in a desktop background slideshow which changes every 30 seconds. After a while, a day or two, the taskbar show/hide animation is no longer smooth and all graphics start to feel sluggish. Using Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com I can see that explorer.exe is using a huge number of GDI Objects, and the number goes up by 1 every time the desktop background changes.

My question: is this a bug in Windows?
