My windows xp is no longer able to update. The validation tool says its not a legal copy.

can microsoft tell me why my windows xp programe softwear OS was registered with them when i first got it and now it is saying that the copy i have installed on my computer is not a genuine copy of XP so i am asking do microsoft know what they are doing because this copy was valadated by them now thay are saying it is not
