Fedora 19, Firefox/Thuderbird, launch failure after system updates

A little over a week ago, (4/25), I used Apper to load updates to a machine my folks use... mostly email and browsing. After the update and a reboot, neither Firefox nor Thunderbird would launch from the UI. So I tried launching from a cli and still no-go; then as root and no-go.

The cli boot gives "GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size == 0' failed ... Bus error (core dumped)", but web searches showed that to be old (2011 or so), or unrelated to this problem.

Confining the troubleshooting to Firefox, I unistalled and reinstalled with no improvement. Then cleared the user's .mozilla directory - again no improvement.

I've glanced through the update log from Apper, but nothing jumps out.

Any clues or suggestions would be appreciated. I've switched them to KMail and Konqueror, but octogenarians don't take kindly to change.

Thanks for your time.
