Original title: Stuck in eternal Startup Repair loop!

Hi everyone,

Every time I start my computer the Startup Repair tool launches, does its business and then informs me that the tool cannot automatically fix the problem.

  • When I look under "Problem details", I see a number of problem signatures, one of which is Problem signature 07: CorruptRegistry.
This is enough to send me into a frenzy, but I kept cool (for now ...).

  • I then looked under "View diagnostic and repair details". Each "Test Performed" entry indicates Result: Completed successfully.
At the end of the list I see "Startup Repair has tried several times but still cannot determine the cause of the problem."

Next step

I pressed <ESC> during startup and went through all the F1, F2, F9, F10 and F11 options.

F11 opened the HP Recovery Manager. I went through the Advanced options > Computer checkup options; namely:

Launch CheckDisk for the Windows Partition

Launch CheckDisk for the WinRE Partition

Open a Command Prompt

The first CheckDisk option runs the first three steps, but Step 4 of 5 seems to be a problem: it stops at 12% complete (85801 of 271344 files processed. I have repeated this checkdisk step several times, each time it stops in exactly the same place.

The second CheckDisk option seems to run OK. It's very quick (perhaps a subset of the first checkdisk option?)

The Open a Command Prompt takes me to X:\windows\system32> I can switch to C:\ and D:\ and my structure seems to be OK.

With all that info, could some kindly geek advise what I should do next? I know just enough about DOS prompts to be dangerous, so if there's anything I can do to solve my problem via the Command Prompt option, could you please give me some KISS steps to follow.

Thanks a million in advance,

Sharon R.
