I got a call at my house from a non American man claiming to be from Microsoft. He we very frantic as he was describing that the wifi network in my house was under siege and that I should act on it right away. I was a bit skeptical, but I let him continue with what he was saying. He had me open up my computer and look around in my computer management and it showed that my computer had 9,774 errors on it. He was talking about how whoever was behind the errors could potentially get ahold of my entire households credit card information if we were to make an online purchase, and that I should not do any online banking (not that I do). At this point he said that I could go to a website that would help me solve this problem, I went to it. He told me to tell him a code and in a few minutes he was able to control my computer through the internet. He was going through all the errors that were listed in the computer management, he sounded very concerned with some of them. After a few minutes of looking he said that the website that I had been to earlier, GBMtechsupport.com could take all these errors away and protect my computer for 5 years for only $400.00. I did not give him any money, he did not get any personal information from me. I am very concerned about the fact that he had control of my computer however. Is there anyway that "they" have a permanent connection to my computer? Can I continue to do online shopping, will my accounts be safe? Can "they" access my passwords and usernames to websites and website history? I'm thinking of completely resetting my computer after this, but I'm still skeptical about this. As I type this out, the message that the man used to gain access to my computer is popping up, adding to my skepticism. What can I do about this?
