redbeard45 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Greetings. Firstly I am an absolute newbie to Windows 2008 Server but am trying to help out a local (very poor!) school. I have been able to set up users and do basic stuff but at the moment, they have a huge worry. There are large amounts of internet data being consumed and from the data sent to us by our ISP, there are large amounts - 200-300 megs per hour, being SENT out every hour for periods of 5-6 hours maybe once a week, not necessarily at the same time, often late at night / early in the morning. The school is not a big computer user, there is no one in the school using the computers, and more is going out than is coming in which doesn't make sense. The ISP cannot tell me where this data is going to. Is there somewhere I can find reports that may be able to help me track down this mysterious internet use? Thanks for any help you can offer, and remember, I am a total newbie at this Cheers and thanks Quote
ICTCity Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Hi, I have questions for you: How do you know that? Have you seen a report? Log? Where do you this traffic? Router? Server? Pc? How can you be sure the traffic is going IN and not OUT? Right now I think the traffic is generated by updates, but I'm not sure... redbeard45 Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 As I stated above, with a little bit of convincing, I was able to get a print out of the data traffic from the school's ISP - I had to go to a higher level than the basic HelpDesk who were very reluctant to give me this. I am quite happy to send you the Excel file off topic if it is helpful. It shows the Uploading and Downloading each hour and I have highlighted the areas of concern to give back to the staff of the school in case they knew of someone using the school (there are a few outside groups that make use of the buildings) and the pattern could reveal something - there was nothing they could think. I also concur that it may be updating but why so much going OUT of the school? I looked for the Microsoft Update service in the Group Policy to see if I could find something set there but it wasn't in a location I expected to find it (according to a Youtube instruction video), and I don't know where to look. I'll say again, I am a real newbie and if the school had any money, I wouldn't be playing around with it. Thanks for getting back to me and I sure would like any help with this as each month, the school is going over its 10g per month Data cap which is costing them money and frustrating the hang out of everyone. In the first month this happened, I found they had a cloud backup service which no one at the school knew about (there has been quite a change of staff including the Principal). A teacher had put 1500 photos on the server (4.5 meg!) and that was sent to the cloud backup service and blew the data cap. But I have got that switched off while we sort out what is happening, so the fact the school went over for a second month was quite a surprise. Quote
ICTCity Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I send you my e-mail as PM so you can give me the excel. ICTCity Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Ok, from the excel file I can't get relevant data... First of all we must understand WHERE the data is destinated / generated. Because of you can't spend money, I don't think you have a free pc with 2 network interfaces... so... let's make a test. Turn off all your devices that you don't need (I mean computers). If you have a wireless network, turn it off too. We must do everything step by step, unless you don't have a pc with 2 interfaces...
