Posted April 14, 201410 yr I'm concerned that a friend may have been scammed. . . he says he'd talked to Microsoft and was referred to another company to get security on his computer. That he had some sort of virus that was taking over his system (he couldn't control his mouse, browser was redirecting or not functioning). He finally looked it up and told me the name of the company was "Direct Bargains" - was out of UK (or he later said Australia). He said Microsoft "farms stuff out" to this company. That didn't ring true for me - and when he finally told me the name of the company - I cringed. This just doesn't sound like something that would come from Microsoft. . . He's given this company full access to his computer - they say they'll go in every 2 months and "clean it" for him. He's also given them about $2000. He's running a desktop with xp and just got a laptop with Windows 8.1. The whole idea of Microsoft referring him to another company - just doesn't sound right to me. My friend is on some rather strong medications and his judgment is not what it used to be. Other things he told me (that this really nice guy at this company told him) were also not sounding legit - such as that the hackers were getting in through his router (he has satellite internet through HughesNet) I'm not extraordinarily tech-savvy - I basically know enough to be dangerous, but I am aware of that and so I try to be cautious. Unfortunately my friend thinks his judgment is spot on so he just charges full ahead. A couple years ago he gave another company access to his computer and they were planting all sorts of **** on his computer (wouldn't surprise me if all of this is still fallout from that) - and that time he thought he was working with hp. If anyone has heard of this company - this type of deal - please let me know. Continue reading...
