Posted April 13, 201410 yr Hi all, right after doing a defrag, this problem started. I've seen one other post from an XP user experiencing something similar, but nothing too helpful. The issue is the icons in the notification area, at least some of them were hidden by the little arrow (chevron) that you click, and the others are revealed. Now, the chevron is not present, and all icons are there at once. All the settings look good as far as I can see, but the problem remains. "Hide inactive icons" is selected in taskbar properties. If you click the "customize" button, all the individual items are shown, active and past, and they're all set to "hide when inactive" (except Windows security alerts which is "always show") I have run sfc /scannow (in case the defrag corrupted some files), but that and chkdsk alike, returned nothing out of the ordinary. I've seen another suggestion, to set one of the icons to "always hide", reboot and change it back to "hide when inactive". This appears to restore normal operation for a while. Some of the icons are indeed hidden (such as the volume control, etc) but as soon as you logoff/logon or restart the PC, it reverts back to the state I described above. Any idea's appreciated.
