What updates are required to the original XP software in order to use the Windows 8 upgrade...

I will be installing Windows 8 Pro here shortly. My question involves problems that may arise later on. If I ever have to re-install Windows 8 I’ll need, I assume, to reinstall Windows XP first because I don’t have a ‘stand alone version’ of Windows 8. (I think ‘stand alone version’ phrase is correct. I’m referring to software that doesn’t need a previously installed approved OS on the disk to install W8.) It may be, that I’ll get asked for my XP product key and I won’t actually need XP installed but I doubt it.

So my question is how many of the XP updates will I need for this Windows 8 upgrade disk to install W8? Is just the basic XP install disk, which I got preinstalled on my Dell computer, enough? Or, will I need updates up to SP3 (which I think requires SP2 but not SP1)? My OEM backup disk probably doesn’t have any of the SP updates.

(I answered a previously asked question (not repeated here) by cloning my original drive onto my second internal drive which has about 2TB of disk space. This way I can run older XP on one drive and W8 on another. I haven’t done it yet but I think it will work. This might be a suggestion for others how might want to keep the old XP for the non-internet programs they have already purchased.)

Thanks for any suggestions!

John
