Posted March 26, 201410 yr This one is for the community: My wife has a Lenovo Z560 running my home rolled ubuntu 12.04 distro. It would randomly shut off for no apparent reason. I got to doing some research and found out that there are power regression issues in all of the 3.xx kernels that effect the intersection of i3,5,7 sandybridge chips with integrated graphics that can cause all kind of problems. I followed several tutorials to no avail. Then I figured it out. AFAIK this is an original solution, I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. I went in to the BIOS and changed the power mode from ACHI to SATA-compatible. It has run for a week with no issues. It did get about 10 degrees C hotter, but it is still well within safe temperature operating parameters for the chip. Hoepfully this will help somebody out. Continue reading...
