Hello

During the update process of the most recent Windows 8 update I had a machine blue screen. After restarting the PC, it tried to automatically repair the system but failed, leaving a text document called srttrail.txt. I then tried using the command prompt under the troubleshooting section of the recovery environment and navigated to the user's documents area. I found that all the user's documents have been deleted apart from one or two files. I then found out that the disk usage was about 30GB used whereas it was more closer to around 500gb+ before. All the user installed programs had gone too.

I took the HDD out, put it in another PC and ran Recuva to see if i could recover any of the user's documents. It found the file names but the files themselves were too corrupted to recover or had been written over. I then ran ran LifeGuard Diagnostics on the disk and found that it's S.M.A.R.T status is good and that it passed the quick test. The HDD is fine.

I am going to do a fresh install of windows on the machine but I just wanted to know what happened to all the files on the disk and why did this happen?

Thank-you
