Posted March 15, 201410 yr I accepted yesterday's March Updates (they always seem to come on Wednesday, not Tuesday, in the UK) and they downloaded and installed OK--as far as I can tell; installation occurred during shutdown. Today, when I powered on the relevant PC, it went through BIOS and XP logo screens OK, but never reached the high-res background colour stage of the boot process; instead it auto-rebooted---and repeated this loop endlessly. Booting in Safe Mode made no difference. I was able to load XP only by telling the PC's BIOS to use my backup drive as the boot drive ... this backup drive is a clone of the normal boot drive; I re-clone it to match the primary disk about once a week. Has anyone else encountered or heard of this problem--and more importantly, found a solution? (Of course, most of those who've been hit by this problem won't have such a backup drive and are therefore unable to boot, let alone get online ... it may take a while before reports of such problems reach us.) Please note (1) that I'm not that interested in the 17 updates to IE7--I never use IE except when I have no choice--i.e. when visiting the Microsoft Update site. I would, to put it mildly, prefer to get the critical XP patch, however. . Please note (2) that I do NOT need to be reminded that Windows XP support is set to end after next month's updates.
