Posted March 12, 201410 yr Star Trek Online is a free to play Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game that launched in 2010. But it launched solely for Windows gamers, leaving Mac users somewhere in the Delta Quadrant, with no way home. That changed on Tuesday when the developers along with Mac conversion specialists TransGaming announced the release of a Mac version of Star Trek Online. Now Mac users can get in on the action. This game is set in the 25th century, about a generation after the events depicted in Star Trek Nemesis. The peace treaty between the Federation and the Klingon Empire has failed; the two old foes are once again at war. The Romulan Star Empire is still reeling from the effects of losing their homeworld, and the Dominion is rebuilding its fleet. The Borg Collective are back, too. (The game is set in the "original" Star Trek universe, post-The Next Generation, rather than the timeline depicted in the recent JJ Abrams movies.) You're captain of your own individual starship. You can pilot a vessel as Federation, Klingon and Romulan to start, though there are dozens of playable races in the game; you can build out different ship classes, go on missions and away teams, and much more. As a free-to-play MMO, Star Trek Online costs you nothing to get started, though subscription tiers and other content is available to purchase to help you customize and get further along in the game.
