windows 7 professional.....how to get security access to view my external hard drives and...

I am a first time user to windows 7 Professional and need to learn how to get access to the files that are connected to the computer either by an external hard drive or by an external flash drive.

The external hard drives or external flash drives can be connected to windows 8 or windows xp computers to view the files but when then identical external hard drives or external flash drives are connected to two different computers with windows 7 professional there are settings that automatically don ot all the access to the external hard drive or external flash drive files.

When viewing computer it displays the external hard drive.

When I left click on it it produces a pop up with title bar: Location is not available

The contents: H:| is not accessible.

Access is denied.

When I right click on the external hard drive and then click on the security tab it displays:

Object name: H:|

To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object's security properties.

Do you want to continue?

Then i clicked on continue and it displayed:

Owner

You do not have permission to view this object's security properties. To view its security properties, you can try taking ownership of the object. As the owner, you can also control who gets permissions on the object. Please not that once you take ownership, the previous owner might not have access to the object.

To try taking ownership of the object, select an account from the list, and then click OK.

Object name: H:|

Current owner: Unable to display current owner.

Change owner to:

the two choices are my name or Administrators

I then chose one and apply and ok and it did not work.

I then chose the other and apply and ok and it did not work.

Then i clicked on other users or groups and entered everyone and that did not work either.

I am the sole user of this brand new computer.

When i click on control panel then user accounts and family safety and then user accounts it displays my name as administrator password protected.

What are the steps so that I can buy an external hard drive or buy a flash drive or use the ones i already have and use them with this computer that has windows 7 professional?

How come the switch of the ownership did not work?

I went back to security again and this time went to the bottom section for special permissions or advanced settings.

And again I kept getting Location is not available

H:\ is not accessible.

Access is denied.

How do you modify windows 7 Professional so that you can get access to your own files on an external hard drive or an external flash drive.

Please list the steps.

Thank you
