In Windows XP Pro I have a lot of folders with a lot of items in them, and I've noticed often when I go in, it shows the list, but then it disappears and it says "Searching for items..." in the status bar at the bottom for more than 10 seconds up to a few minutes. I can understand it looking for the folders and file names in the folder, but it makes no sense that it should take this long just to show a bunch of names. Even if it's looking for icons, I've seen it still load the list and then show the icons later; I'm perfectly fine with that, and would prefer that to having a blank page for a while. Linux shows the names fast, Mac, Android, you name it.

Here's my questions:

  1. Is there some way to just have it show the folder/file names quickly?
  2. Is it trying to collect a list of sub-folders/files?
  3. Is it searching sub-folders for pictures? I use Details view, which wouldn't show picture/video thumbnails.
