XP Backup Problem

I am trying to retire a Windows XP machine with 12GB of program/user data on a three partitioned hard drive. I am using a 32 GB thumb drive as my back-up disk. I have tried using a backup and backup/copy approach using the Backup Wizard. Each time, the backup program runs for 1.5-2 hours, then abruptly stops at about 4 GB copied/backed-up. When I check the properties of my thumb drive, it shows 4 GB used, 26 GB available. What can I do to complete the backup? I intend to reformat the hard drive prior to recycling or giving away the machine.
