Windows 7 is hanging during updates and will not install programs anymore

I am having major issues lately with my HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop with Windows 7 Pro running.

Last two nights when I shut down, my PC says installing 1 of 1 updates...it never updates...next morning I have to do a manual shutdown.

I also have programs that will not install or run anymore.

I have Norton 360 running and attempted to install Webroot to scan for Malware but that does not even loan.

Tried running Microsoft Fix It and that never loads/runs either. I keep getting a "not responding" in processes.

Please help.
