[EDITED to clarify some my notes]

I have a x86 desktop 5310S desktop from Gateway running WinXP SP3 and IE8.

I have a handfull of older Family Tree Maker data files that I need to convert to a readable format for use on the newer version 2008-2014 FTM programs.

Ancestry.com says that Family Tree Maker 2005 SE (Starter Edition) has the capability to do this and provides the downloadable 2005 SE Installer file, ftm2005se.exe, which I placed on my desktop.

Once installed the software is good for only 14 days.

When I try to run the downloaded executable file, it begins to extract the cab files, then starts preparing the InstallShieldWizard but then only gets halfway through before crashing.

An error message pops up with: "An installation support file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\{B136E4A4-7660-4f15-9752-EF8E6BA7866D}\_IsUser.dll' could not be installed. Access is denied".

On a related note, I had discontinued use of (but not uninstalled) my previous version, Family Tree Maker 2005, whenever I first got the FTM 2008 version over 6 years ago.

They both had (seemingly) worked just fine at that time and my data files exceeded 85MB each.

But right after getting the 2008 version, I quit working on my family history and I have not tried using either one since that time, until now.

It was only recently, then, that I discovered the problems with using them.

I have tried everything I could think of, but have gotten nowhere.

Ancestry.com Customer support recommended uninstalling and reinstalling both the 2005 and the 2008 versions.

I did successfully uninstall and reinstall my FTM 2008 Version (from CD) but because of the need to convert my older files first, I can not actually use it.

Then when I tried to uninstall/reinstall the 2005 version, nothing happened on the reinstall, no error messages, absolutely nothing at all. It starts, then goes into Never, Never Land.

I have repeatedly tried to reinstall the 2005 program both with and without the MSE and Windows Firewall turned on. The results are the same each time.

My computer is fully up to date and I have run MalwareBytesAntiMalware and other antivirus and antimalware programs with nothing being found.

I am out of ideas. I need to convert my files before I lose them entirely.

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks

Vernon
