Posted February 17, 201410 yr Hi, See this problem posted on many forums on the web but cant find a solution. Well lets give you the facts and see if someone can assist and solve it. The laptop is a Dell Latitude d800 running windows xp pro, version 2002, sp3. Processor is 1.7mhz with 512 mb ram. The pc`s are dell optiplex gx280`s, service tags 9h6cw1j, 2.53ghz and 2g ram, 500g hdd and other is service tag 21qhw1j, 2.53ghz and 1g ram and 80gig hdd Above for info only as problem is as follows: 1) cpu goes to 100% within approx 1 minute of starting ANY type of windows update, including windows security essentials, automatic updates, manual access to windows update site etc, and network utilization to 0%. 2) When at rest cpu system idle process is at 99% and rapidly drops to zero and svchost goes to 99% as soon as updates are requested. 3) Computer at this point becomes useless and does not respond, making it impossible to do anything, closing down the browser when manually accessing windows update site or stopping the update and the cpu returns to normal. 4) I have two office desktops that have the same problem, dell optiplex gx280`s, so it is not limited to the laptop, also running xp pro sp3, all the machines are running genuine software from a clean install some four years ago, it was not an upgrade, formatted drives and installed software from three separate packages. 5) Browsers are all ie8 with latest cumulative update kb2618444, with last update on the system is on 07/01/2014, kb2898715, kb2904266, kb2892075 as was advised these would correct problem and manually downloaded and installed same. 6) Last automatic update was 06/12/2013 and this is when problem started, installed on that day is kb2900986, kb2862152, kb2876331, kb2868626.
