Cannot install MSE - error 0x8004FF85

Running XP SP3 on a Lenovo X61 laptop. Installed latest version of IE 8, just for this purpose (I normally run Chrome).

My major regret: that I removed MSE in response to a failure to update, and now cannot reinstall it!

Hv spent about 8 hours on this, to no avail.

Steps taken:

All removals done with REVO: MSE itself, Windows Defender, Live OneCare. Used Regedit to removal all references to MSE, as well as any remnants of other antivirus that was removed long ago (Symantec, ZoneAlarm), antimalware

(includinig SpyBot, Adaware), etc. searched for all references to McAfee, found a couple, and removed them.

Used Fixit, and yet another cleaning tool. Ran CC, to clean up registry. Deactivated all startup programs using selective startup, except Microsoft programs. Ran mseremoval.bat. Must have rebooted a dozen times.

Nothing helps!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
