What is Microsoft Security essentials and why do I all of a sudden keep getting warning messages.

All of a sudden I get pop-up messages that say Potential Threat Details Microsoft Security Essentials. Then it lists possible threats. I don't even know if I have this. What does it do? Is it the same as my virus and malware protection? Should I allow

it to remove the threat?
