Windows 7: email links in Windows Live Mail opens my browser

Running Windows Live Mail under Windows 7. When there is an email address hyperlink in a received email in WLM, clicking on it causes my browser to open to the default page, instead of a blank email.This happens regardless of the default browser setting

- IE, Chrome or FF, and even though I can see that the link is prefixed mail to:
