Vista suddenly takes an age to load and then keeps freezing

Vista has suddenly become unusable. it is taking up to an hour to load up and then keeps freezing. I have not added any hardware or any software to the computer, this just started happening. I have run checks for the memory and used the repair utility

but nothing cures the problem. It has also lost all of the restore points so I cannot use this to restore to an earlier time. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
