Are there any free operating systems that I can boot from a CD to recover my data?

My computer won't boot, not even into safe mode, and I've misplaced by Windows XP CD. Is there a free program or operating system that you folks know of that I can boot from a CD (without having to reformat or partition anything) so I can recover my personal

data? At this point, recovering my data is all that I'm interested in.
