Windows updates fail with Error Code: 0x80246008. Windows troubleshooter fails to start!

 

 

Following things back as far as I'm able it seems that I lack .net framework 2 but that won't install either.

 

 

I'm only an enthusiastic amateur here and I've no idea what has caused whatever has gone wrong. The PC is running XP sp3 and while's it's old it's fine apart from the lack of updates.

 

Any help, ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
