cannot turn windows defender on..deleted norton..need help!!!!

I have a HP sleekbook with windows 8 and it is driving me nuts. I ran out of time on the free Norton trial. I deleted it and I think uninstalled it too. I however cannot turn Windows Defender on. Technology frustrates me and I need help...any suggestions???
