KB2506014 breaks boot sequence, forces Startup Repair loop, in Windows 7 Enterprise & Windows 8 Pro,

I've recently upgraded to a ~2.7 TB OS boot disk, meaning it's formatted to use GPT and I rely on EFI. I've spent two weeks trying to diagnose why, after successful installations, Windows 7 and Windows 8 would both break themselves on my machine after

some (previously anonymous) sequence of updates. Startup Repair (or its Windows 8 equivalent) ends up launching every time, fails to find/fix any faults, and I'm forced to reboot in vain.

With Windows 7 Enterprise, x64, I've finally narrowed the source of the problem to KB2506014. I understand that it patches the bootloader to fix a security vulnerability. Now I can see that it's reported as a fault by others, too, and that the principal

workaround is to simply avoid installing it.

Is there a fix for this yet, or is there some deeper root cause? It's incredibly frustrating.
