Windows AutoUpdates

Hi All Computer Experts,

 

I am using HP Compaq Presario, MS WindowsXP Home Edition SP2 - 32bits

 

There is Windows Automatic Updates function in System Properties. I have selected this function for everyday auto-updates. How do I know that this function is working alright? I did not see any indication in the taskbar telling me that my computer is

in the process of auto-updating or it has been auto-updated whenever I use my computer. I also did not get to see any report of the auto-update. If I select the time for the auto-update to be around midnight when my computer is power off, will it perform

the updating once my computer is turned on the next morning? Will the auto-updates perform or continue while I am working on my computer or must it wait until my computer is idle? How do I perform a manual update sometimes?
