"Operations are in progress, please wait..." Win7 Updates installed, system not restarting.

After Windows Update installed 9 important updates on my Windows 7 machine today, it needed to restart, so I clicked "Restart" to do. Shortly after, received the message "Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically

after the operations are complete." For the last 90 minutes the same message is on screen, and some occasional DISK light activity. (I can't believe it's taking this long to reboot.)I'm afraid to turn the machine off and restart without talking to someone who might know better first.

Is it OK to force a restart, or should I be doing/looking elsewhere for answers first? I don't want to cause more problems than necessary. I'd love to talk to a tech, but finding a number is impossible.Thank you for your help!
